M1872 Enlisted Pleated Front Blouse

The pattern 1872 Enlisted Men's pleated blouse with branch of color piping in wool. It comes with a nine large general service buttons on the front, is made from 16 ounce dark blue woo. It comes unlined and has two side pockets. It has tube sleeves with a single cuff button for decoration. The pleats can be left open or they can be sewn down. The open pleats tend to billow in the slightest wind, where the sewn closed pleats will always look pressed down.

This coat was adopted by the Army Uniform Board in 1872. It was a very stylish fatigue blouse with pleats on the fromt. It has colored piping to indicate the branch of service and an integral waist belt. It was found to be impractical in the field and replaced in 1874 with the M1874 fatigue blouse.

   Artillery - Red Trim.
   Cavalry - Yellow Trim.
   Infantry - Sky Blue Trim.

The 1872 and 1873 chevrons were significantly different from the Civil War period chevrons. The chevron was a piece of branch and service colored wool facing cloth with black silk chain stitch outlining the pattern. The black area on our chevrons is dark blue wool.

The M1884 Gold Bouillon dress coat chevrons are the same pattern as the M1872 chevrons, except they are made with Gold Bouillon.

In 1898 the Army authorized cotton chevrons to be used on the khaki uniform. This was so that the coat and chevrons would shrink at the same rate. These cotton chevrons are ONLY for use on the khaki coats.
