The uniform regulations adopted by the Confederacy in 1861 specify a chasseur style cap having grey colored top and sides and a specific colored lower band to indicate the branch of service. The caps were supposed to have a colored "pom-pom" on the top. From observations of originals, it appears very few of these caps were ever made. There is no brass slide on the chinstrap. Cotton lined with "CSA" side buttons. In early 1862 Confederate Uniform Board changed the color scheme of the caps to the style most often seen in museums (other than the all grey): for the 1862 Regulation Kepi, the top and sides of the cap are in the branch of service color wool and all caps are to have a dark blue band. There is no brass slide on the chinstrap. Cotton lined with "CSA" side buttons. Other color combinations can be made based on documentation. Branch of Service Colors: Artillery - Red, Cavalry - Yellow, Infantry - Sky Blue or French Blue, Militia - Black.
Hat comes UNTRIMMED. Branch insignia, regimental number and company letter can be added to purchase. Insignia, if purchased, is supplied loose and normally ships separately from cap.

General Jackson Forage Cap: a fine reproduction of the cap given to General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson by his wife Anna in early 1862. The original cap is at the VMI Museum in Lexington, Virginia and is now faded to an almost tan color but still shows some evidence of it's original cadet grey color. Based on research by George Moor, a foremost authority on General Jackson, it appears the cap may have faded early in it's existence, possibly even while the General wore it. Our cap is made using our top quality cadet grey wool and lined with black polished cotton. The dark blue band receives a 1/2" gold lace and is then sewn to the cap. The leather brim has a thin strip of leather binding the front edge. Adjustable leather chin strap with Virginia State Seal buttons on the sides. General Jackson Forage Cap "faded": we also offer the cap in a "faded" version. Due to the high quality dye used in our Cadet Grey Wool, the cadet grey color will not fade out like General Jackson's original cap. Our top quality tan wool is used in the "faded" cap. Everything else is the same. Professor Jackson VMI Forage Cap: to complete the Jackson we offer the cadet cap used when Jackson was at the VMI. It is an exact copy of the dark blue forage cap the was used at 1st Manassas. This cap has the smaller 1/2" chin strap and is without a buckle, just like the original. Colonel Randolph's Forage Cap:
reproduction of Forage Cap worn by Colonel George W. Randolph of the First
Virginia Artillery. Cadet grey wool with black cotton lining. Crescent style
brim with edge binding. US Eagle side buttons. Appropriate rows of gold Flat
braid copied from the original cap located at the Museum of the Confederacy.
Leather chin strap (5/8") is adjustable. Material

More slouch hats are coming.

Civil War troops also wore hat cords on their
hats to designate their Branch. They were more prevalent at the beginning of
the war as they became less popular as the war went on, although they remained
more popular than the hat brass. There were made of worsted wool. Our
reproductions are duplicates of the originals.
