The M1885 Enlisted Dismounted Dress Coat, is a Frock Coat. It
comes with Branch of Service color trim. The Branch of Service trim is on the Collar, Cuffs,
Back Flaps, Epaulets, Belt Loops and the piping on the edges. Coat has a belt loop on each
side at the waist. It has a corset jean body lining and black skirt lining. It is the same
specifications as the M1872 foot style dress frock coats, except the collar is entirely
solid branch of service color, the belt loops have been dropped and the rear pocket flap
trim is full length. In 1885 the Infantry trim color was changed to WHITE from the sky blue
used previously.
In 1885, new Chevrons for the Dress Coats were adopted by the Army uniform board. They
were 1/2" gold lace on a branch of service wool backer, as seen in the photo at the
left. Patterned from original specifications.

The 1872 and 1873 chevrons were significantly
different from the Civil War period chevrons. The chevron was a piece of branch and
service colored wool facing cloth with black silk chain stitch outlining the pattern.
The black area on our chevrons is dark blue wool.
The M1884 Gold Bouillon dress coat chevrons are the same pattern as the M1872 chevrons, except
they are made with Gold Bouillon.
In 1898 the Army authorized cotton chevrons to be used on the khaki uniform. This was so that the coat and chevrons
would shrink at the same rate. These cotton chevrons are ONLY for use on the khaki coats.
