U.S. M1851 Enlisted Dress

M-1851 Enlisted Dress Coat: In 1851 uniform changes were adopted that gave enlisted men
in ALL branches of the service a single breasted frockcoat as their dress coat– shown here for the Dragoons.
Our coat features the 19 ounce dark blue field service wool and has a 2-1/4” collar height with square corner
and “V” opening in front. Most branches had the solid colored trim, however, Engineers and Ordnance were given
cord piping in place of the solid facings– a fore runner to the M-1854 Dress Coat. Functional Cuffs close with
two small buttons. Note the special curved trim design on the cuff- see enlargement. Hook and Eye at the throat.
Nine button front with two buttons on the back of the skirt. Our frockcoats have raw bottom skirt edges per
originals
Half lined to the waist with natural cotton. Two hidden tail pockets but no chest pocket.
Optional pad and quilt stitching in the chest area is available. The General Service button with plain shield
is used.
M1851 Musician’s Dress Frock Coat: were given a coat to match their branch troops in color dark blue and
a “plastron” was added to the chest area to designate “Musician”. The plastron is an overlay of branch trim
colored wool and is not removable.
Regulations called for the edges to be plain (see enlargement), but many Band Masters
added buttons around the perimeter for more style (coat at left). If perimeter buttons are ordered, they are
inserted in the plastron while it is being attached and not removable.

delivery. Custom Clothing and Uniforms are not returnable. Rush orders are available for an
additional price. A rush order reduces the manufacturing time from 8 - 10 weeks to 4 - 5 weeks. The price

items take 9 to 11 weeks for delivery; UNLESS the item has a delivery time listed, then that is the delivery time.
Most other clothing (WHITE Cotton Shirts, Cravats, Suspenders, Felt Hats, etc.) take 2 - 4 weeks for delivery.
