U.S. or C.S. Enlisted Civil War Slouch Hat

U.S. Officers Slouch Hat, 19th Century Men's Hat

The U.S. Enlisted Slouch Hat is the enlisted version of the Officers Slouch Hat. It is the same hat as the Officers slouch, INSTEAD OF the ribbon band sewn around the brim edge it has two rows of stitching. (PICTURE IS OF TRIMMED OFFICERS HAT.)

The Trimmed Hat comes with the hat cord (in the branch color) and brass branch insignia. Branch trim colors are: Artillery - Red, Cavalry - Yellow, Engineer - Yellow, Infantry - Lt. Blue, Ordnance - Wine and Rifleman - Green. The Trimmed Hat is supplied with trim loose (not attached).

Made-On-Order item, please allow 3 - 4 weeks (3 - 6 weeks with Insignia Sewn On) for standard delivery. If needed by a certain date (minimum 1 week away), call us to see if it is possible (see contact page for phone number - DO NOT use email for this). U.S. or C.S. Officer's Regulation Civil War Slouch Hat

US Officers Slouch Hat, Cavalry Trim

The U.S. Officer's Slouch Hat was authorized for all officers by regulation. This same hat was used by Confederate officers in both Black and Grey. This hat is made of good quality Wool Felt. Officers slouch has ribbon hat band and a ribbon binding sewn around the brim edge.

Fully Trimmed hat comes with Officers Embroidered Gold Bullion Branch Insignia and Black & Gold Officer's Hat Cord (as shown at top) for BOTH U.S. and C.S. (Confederate) officers. The only hat insignia that is different for Confederate is the Staff emblem, all others are the same for both U.S. and C.S.. Trim is supplied loose (not attached), but can be sewn on for an additional charge.

US Forage Cap M1872: Our reproduction Model 1872 US Forage Cap is a beauty! It was officially used until 1888.Top quality wool, polished cotton lining with leather brim and sweatband with correct size leather chin strap (1/2" for 1872 and later caps) with brass slide buckle. The M-1872 cap is shorter in height than the Civil War era Kepi caps. Because of this, the cap tends to ride quite high on the head-giving one the sensation it will slide off.

The 9 ounce leather brim is available without edge binding or with edge binding added. Enlisted Insignia at right are correct pattern for 1872 and later and may be ordered below. For Officer's, order our US Officer's embroidered badges.

Insignia shown but NOT included. Branch Insignia, can be added to purchase. Insignia, if purchased, is supplied loose.

M1875 Black and 1880's Tan Campaign Hat

U.S. M1875 Black and 1880's Tan (Indian Wars) Campaign / Slouch Hat, 19th Century Men's Hat

This hat is made of good quality Black or Tan (Light Brown) Wool Felt. Available as Officer's (with banded brim edge) or enlisted (no banded brim edge, but two rows of stitching). The enlisted version is shown.

M1875 hat is BLACK and comes with no vent or optional punched star or snowflake vent. Select "no vent" if you are going to purchase the M1876 Bracher ventilator for this hat.

1880's hat is TAN. DOES NOT come with the screen vents, which are available separately.

M1881 Dress Helmet, Foot Service

U.S. M1881 (Indian Wars) Dress Helmet for Foot Service, 19th Century Men's Hat

This helmet is a "Good" quality reproduction, but is not as thick a felt as the originals. It is made of wool felt and is not cork lined. It will not last as long; but if treated properly it will probably last longer than you will. More description coming soon.

Enlisted insignia (Spike and base, plate/shield, side buttons, leather band and chin strap - shown) are price separately.

Foot Service Officer's Helmets were the same as the enlisted, except that they use a chain hook (in back), a hook on the right side button and a chain chin strap. All metal items are to be Gilt. The regimental number is in silver and placed on the bottom of the shield.

Senior Infantry Officers were mounted. They used the Mounted Service Helmet with a White Buffalo or Yak Hair Plume and a Gold Bullion Helmet Cord.

Working towards availability in: Artillery (Red cord and plume), Cavalry (Yellow cord and plume), Indian Scout (Red and White cord and plume), Signal Corps (Orange cord and plume) and Staff (Black cord and plume) versions. Additional Information and pictures.

Enlisted insignia (plume, plume socket, plume base, plum pin, plate/shield, side buttons, leather band and chin strap - shown) (cord rings and cord - not shown) are priced separately.

Officer's Helmets were the same as the enlisted, except that they use a Buffalo or Yak hair branch color plume, Gold Bullion Helmet Cord, chain hooks (I have seen some with the 2 cord rings plus 1 chain hanger in the back and others with 2 chain hooks replacing the cord rings plus the chain hook in the back) and a chain chin strap. All metal items are to be Gilt. The regimental number is in silver and placed on the bottom of the shield.

Fine quality reproduction of the M1895 Dress Cap as issued to both officers and enlisted men. It is Dark Blue Wool with a worsted wool band. It comes with a Black Enameled Leather Visor that has a bound edge for both officer's and enlisted men. The enlisted cap has a Leather Chin Strap with buckle and the officer's cap has a Gold Bullion chin strap. Both come with Eagle Side Buttons and have two grommets on each side of the top for ventilation.

The Enlisted Cap: was worn plain, without any insignia.

The Officer's Cap: was worn with the Officer's Embroidered Eagle Cap device (Insignia), as shown. The Eagle Cap Device IS NOT included with the cap, but can be add to your purchase for an additional amount. When purchased with the cap it is supplied loose, but can also be sewn on for an extra charge.

Fine quality reproduction of the M1902 Bell Crown Hat. Dark blue wool with leather visor. This hat (untrimmed) can also be used as a Civil War and Post Civil War Navy hat, as it is the same style as the non-regulation hat worn by some naval officers (sometimes referred to as the pilots hat / cap).

Trimmed version is available in Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry ONLY. The trimmed version comes with Cap Band, Branch Insignia, Leather Chin Strap, Buckle and Eagle Side Buttons.

Artillery Cap: Band is of Scarlet Wool and comes with Original Crossed Cannons Insignia.

Cavalry Cap: Band is of Yellow Wool and comes with No Insignia (plain, for you to supply your own) OR with Reproduction Span-Am War Embroidered Eagle OR with Reproduction Span-Am War Embroidered Crossed Saber Insignia for 1st, 9th or 10th Cavalry only.

Infantry Cap: Band is of Light Blue Wool and comes with Original Crossed Rifles Insignia.

Cap Band Only: The available cap bands are below the caps in the "Trimmed as" drop down, they DO NOT come in sizes so ignore the "Size" dropdown.

This hat only comes in three sizes, but it can be stretched to SOME other sizes: 7 to 7-1/8, 7 1/4 to 7-3/8 and 7-1/2 to 7-5/8. This does require a hat stretcher and some time.

UNTRIMMED hat (NO chin strap or buckle, NO buttons, NO branch insignia and NO hat band.

U.S. Civil War & Indian Wars Enlisted Hat Cords

Civil War troops also wore hat cords on their hats to designate their Branch. They were more prevalent at the beginning of the war as they became less popular as the war went on, although they remained more popular than the hat brass. There were made of worsted wool. Our reproductions are duplicates of the originals.

Hand Twisted

This is the Officer's Hat cord for the Hardee hat and Slouch Hats. Regulations call for a Gold and Black hat cord for all officer's except Generals who wear all gold, with the gold being gold bullion. It was used for both the Civil War & Indian Wars. There is also a Non-Regulation Hat Cord of Gold Bullion and Branch Colors available for Officer's of the Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry.

Staff and Field Officers, Regulation: Black Silk and Gold Bullion hat cord. On some of these the acorn is reversed with a gold bullion tip and black netting. This hat cord is available either in machine braided or hand twisted. The hand twisted is thicker cording.

General Officers, Regulation: Gold Bullion hat cord for all Generals.

Artillery, NON-Regulation: Red Silk and Gold Bullion hat cord.

Cavalry, NON-Regulation: Yellow Silk and Gold Bullion hat cord. This one looks very much like the Generals and you have to look close to see that there is yellow silk and it is not all gold bullion.

Infantry, NON-Regulation: Light Blue Silk and Gold Bullion hat cord.
