The early war period saw many different styles, trims and types of uniforms. Our Early War Shelljacket reflects the "militia influence" of a romantic war. Uniforms have more trim, more buttons (always shiny) and were usually designed by the militia units themselves prior to the war. When war came and most militia units were absorbed into Confederate service, they quickly found that their fancy militia dress uniforms were unsuitable for field use. The Plain jackets are made in Medium Grey or Brown Grey wool colors and different Wooljean colors. All are cotton lined and most feature a nine button front, however, other button amounts are available at extra cost. Specify Branch of Service Color: Red - Artillery, Yellow - Cavalry, Sky Blue - Infantry, French Blue - Infantry (French Blue was used in both the Eastern and Western theatres of the War.) or Black - Militia. Chevrons are not included with uniforms, whether pictured or not, but can be added for an additional charge. Material and Color Samples Page. Measurement Chart: Click Here. Also, throughout the war, some soldiers procured their own uniforms, either by private purchase of tailor made clothing or by having the folks back home "make up" a new uniform to replace their tattered one. We refer to these nondescript jackets as "Common (Plain) Confederate Shelljackets". They do not have the piping down the front and around the bottom, but can have collar and cuff branch of service colors.
A "Home Style" version is available unlined and with no trim.

These are examples of the plain shelljacket (without trim colors) made from our wool jean (Homespun) cloth. These uniforms were made from cloth that the tailor or seamstress could procure locally. Rarely would they resemble what the rest of the soldier's unit was wearing. This may explain some eye witness accounts of Confederate soldiers wearing such a hodgepodge mixture of uniforms.
There is also an option of an outside pocket, either on the left or right. The pocket option is available for an additional cost.
