Ladies 1870s & 1880s Bustle Dress:
Day, Tea or Evening |
|
 |
This bustle dress can be worn from 1870s thru the 1880s.
Although this dress, is a two piece, it's designed to be worn with the large bustle,
or padded bird cage style, which we also make. See bustle or call on this
item.
The picture on the
left shows it to be a bodice, separate from the skirt. It's pointed in front with a little ruffle look in back.
Buttons down front. Long full 3/4 length sleeves that tie above elbow, yet can be
made straight and wrist length if you like. There's lace/ ruffle around
collar. Bodice has that sort of a jacket look, that they wore then. At waist
there's a tie, that goes around and ties in back.
The top shorter skirt will have material
or lace ruffle on the end, along with the lower skirt. Suggest
walking length.
This dress can be made to fit a variety of images, from the everyday woman up through
a wealthy upper class woman, depending on material and trim. Prices vary according to the materials chosen and
the amount of work that goes into making each dress.
We do have the have the slip with the train that goes with this dress, although we
haven't had the time to add it, along with the large padded bustle, which is cotton shell with poly fill,
instead of horse hair. Just inquire at azrahist@aol.com

above. Call or e-mail Frances to discuss your needs and desires.

|
Frocks of Ages
“IMPERIALs”
exclusively for USHist.com |
The dresses in this section are they
type of dresses worn by the wealthy / upper class women during the 1870s and
1880s. Just as they were expensive during that time, they are also expensive
now. These gowns will all feature real jewels and/or real pearls and of
course, silks and other fine fabrics. They are the expensive and ornate
gowns that only the very wealthy could afford. Each gown is a work of art
and is a "one-of-a-kind". Just as with all our women's dresses, we will not
make and two dresses the exactly same. When one of these dresses is sold
there will never be another one just like it.
Because of the nature of these dresses, they will each
have a separate page. In each case the dress shown is already made and is
therefore only available in the size and color shown. If you would like of
this quality in a different size, color or with other variations we will be
happy to work with you to commission one of these exquisite dresses for you.
The dresses shown are available for immediate
delivery, unless they have already been sold. Commission dresses are custom
and the delivery time varies upon the work required and our current work
load.

Ladies 1880s Polonaise
& Walking Skirt: Day or Evening Dress |
|
 |
This is a very beautiful dress that can be worn by
most.
The top is a long type of bodice as you can
tell. There is a gathered point on each side and a long hanging gathered
section in back. The sleeves are 3/4 long sleeves with ruffles. The
bodice / top around neck can be material or cut out for an evening look.
Buttons up the front. Ruffles or lace out line the bodice edge. And this is
boned and lined.
The skirt is several rows of ruffles, as you can also tell.
Suggestion; For best result in appearance, is a quarter moon
bustle to wear in back under bodice. A very stiff ruffle under slip to make
the skirt stand out, &/ or a 2 bone hoop. Suggest in material, (bodice or
skirt) being print & one being solid.
Material (cotton), (print and solid okay ?),
color, neck cut. The addition for a gathered under slip, or hoop, or bustle
pad.

1882-1888 Bustle Wedding Gown with Cathedral Train.
by Past Patterns #303
The bodice fastens by lacing in the front which is drawn
through eyelets. The bodice is boned and form fitting. The sleeves are
7/8 length. The neck and sleeves are trimmed with Brussels lace.
The bustle is created with metal stays in three rows from below the
center back waist to the knees. While the bustle is stylish it is not
necessary to enhance the gown which is quite lovely without it or the
cathedral train.
The cathedral train is separate. It is trimmed on the inside outer
edge with a row of dust ruffles called a balayeuse during 19th century.
The original fabric was a cream silk faille.
The pattern is multi-sized 10 through 16.

Three Piece Ensemble,
Fashionable circa 1883-18844
Bodice #905, Skirt #906 &
Overskirt #907
by Past Patterns.
Past Patterns' Summer Three-Piece Dress is worn without a bustle. The
October 1889 issue Godey's Ladies Magazine states: "The war between a small bustle and
none at all still continues. Everyone cannot dispense with this little addition to
their figures. Those who can dispense with it, however, are only to glad to do so,
and, by making underskirts very full at the back, this can generally be done, even by
not quite perfect figures."
Acknowledgments: Special thanks to The Warren County Historical Society in Lebanon,
Ohio and Ericka Mason at Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers, Indiana.
Order this pattern in sizes 8-14 (bust 31-1/2 - 36-1/2), 16-20 (bust 38-42) and
22-26 (bust 44-48).

Three Piece Ensemble: #905, #906 and #907 in sizes 8 - 14 requires 8-3/4 Yds.; sizes
16 - 20 requires 9 Yds.; sizes 22 - 26 requires 9-3/4 Yds.
Separately:
#905 Bodice sizes 8 - 14 requires 2 Yds.; sizes 16 - 20 requires 2-1/4
Yds. and sizes 22 - 26 requires 2-5/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.

Late 1880-1892 Day Dress
by Past Patterns. #903
The full skirt is gathered into a flattering point at the waist front
and back. Two pockets, one large in the back and another in the front for your watch
make this a practical dress.
The original fabric is a cotton plaid, woven in a light blue, white and yellow. The
original dress is the one with the puffy sleeves and shirt collar. We replaced the
shirt collar with a short standing collar so popular in the practical clothing of the
1880s and removed the puff at the top of the sleeve to give you a style variation.
The pattern is multi-sized 10 through 20. Sizes 10-14 require approximately 5-7/8
Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric; sizes 16-20 require approximately 6-1/4Yds. of 45 inch
wide fabric.

1880s-1890s Riding Habit Skirt #900
The Riding Habit Skirt is the classic full riding skirt with darts
at the knees and longer on the left side and front to hide the feet. When walking
the extra length is draped around the right hip and fastened at the center back
waist with a button and ribbon loop.
Multi-sized 10-20. All sizes require 3-1/4 Yds. of preferably 60" wide fabric
to prevent piecing.
1880s-1890s Riding Habit Trousers #901
