This style of 'Spanish' Saddle was made from the mid 1830s through the 1860s. In the Victorian era any saddle with a horn was often referred to as a Spanish or Mexican saddle. It has a rawhide covered tree with heavy harness leather rigging and features a tooled rigging. It has a high pommel and horn. The saddle comes with standard wood stirrups, but Rawhide covered Oxbow stirrups are optional.

These saddles were very common and were produced from Florida to Missouri and to California. Before the War in the 1850s, Thornton Grimsley was making the Spanish Saddle in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1858 this saddle in black with the skirts (as shown on the right) became the U.S. Army wagon saddle.

In the future I will be adding a Mochila to this saddle, allowing for two different looks.

The girth and surcingle are added by default by the shopping cart, so these saddles are ready to ride. (Also available without the girth and surcingle.) NOTE: the surcingle is part of the engineering design of this saddle, although not absolutely necessary for use, it is a safety item and we DO HIGHLY recommend its use.
