The Southern or Monticello model. It is appropriate for Seminole Wars and as a work shoe from the early 1800's until the present day, it is built on the same lasts as the Federal Contract Bootee. It has five lace holes and a pull tab on the back of the boot. It's color is russet or natural and the rough-out model takes on a beautiful color when given a coat of Lexol or other oil. Smooth or rough. Sewn-On Soles. This page is in ladies shoe sizes. The Monticello or Civil War Southern shoe is the closest thing to a ready-made 1800s work shoe that you will find. Shoes like these were packed 100 pairs to the barrel and shipped from Boston to St Louis and on to Taos, to the Western frontier and any seaport that the Stars and Stripes traded with. This type of shoe was worn by the Yankee seamen who, in the 1820s rounded Cape Horn to load cattle hides in the tiny Spanish port of Los Angeles de California. They took the hides back to Boston, where they were made into shoes and harness. These ship from Florida. Normal delivery time is 5 to 10 days. "Large/Small Sizes" or if your size is out of stock can take 2 to 6 weeks. |

Until recently, museums and collectors kept only the fanciest footwear. Work shoes were thrown out like old sneakers. Most of the surviving women's shoes of the Colonial era were made of linen or silk. The problem with fabric shoes is that the unending varieties of linen and damask and ball gown material make it impossible to make a shoe except on an individual basis. Our supplier studied dozens of books and surviving leather shoes in museum collections. We found that the etchings of Hogarth (1740-1780) were a gold mine of information on Colonial period shoes. They also designed several models in leather that may be dyed to any color you desire. All of Colonial ladies' shoes are all leather, including heels and lifts. Buckles are not included in the base prices shown. |

Order the men's size, but one and one half sizes smaller than your regular women's shoe size. Few women will require anything wider than an E width (our narrowest). Thus. if you take a normal woman's size 9c, you probably will find a good fit in a Concord 7-1/2 E. The best shoe around for a stony site. Buckles not included.
