Why a DMR .VS. Analog Radio

Even if you are not interested in DMR right now you may in the future, plus the DMR radios have the following features:
    More channels. The ones on this page offer 4,000. You will likely never use this many but you will need more than the 128 of some radios. The SER plan already has created 8 Digital Simplex Frequencies and has allocated a total of 200 channels for future possible use.
    Up to 250 Zones. I haven't found a need for them, except if you have more than 250 channels in your radio.
    Up to 250 Scan Lists of 50 channels each. These you can definately use. One for the SER plan. One (or more) to skip a frequency being used or is not working correctly (like 760 when solar is not working.) One (or more) if you go out out of area so you can scan the frequencies in that area. One (or more) to scan whatever.
    There may be analog radios that offer these features, but I haven't seen them.

Advantages of a Handheld (HT), Mobile or Base Radio?

Handheld (HT) Radio:
    Pros: Very portable. Self contained (Radio, Antenna & Power). Usually less expensive.
    Cons: Less power. Usually not as good of receiver (direct conversion instead of superheterodyne).

Mobile Radio:
    Pros: More power. Probably has better/more sensitive receiver (may be superheterodyne). Can be used as a base station with a 12v power source and external antenna. Probably had more features than a handheld (HT).
    Cons: Not very portable. Larger than a handheld (HT). Requires 12v power. Requires an external antenna.

Base Radio:
    Pros: May have more power than a handheld (HT) or mobile. Probably has better/more sensitive receiver (may be superheterodyne). May have more features than a handheld (HT) or mobile.
    Cons: Not very portable. Larger than a handheld (HT) or mobile. May require a 12v power source. Requires an external antenna.

Why is this Re-Branded
package cheaper than
the brand radio?

We suggest at least an extra battery and a better antenna for the hand held (HT) radios. A spare radio in case one fails is also a good idea. Especially with the cheap ones.

This not like going out and buying an AM/FM or solar emergency radio. These radios talk and receive. If not programmed correctly you will not be able
to talk and listen to other SER radios and possibly no one else. If your radio is not programmed for the SER plan, it won't work on the SER plan!

Radios programed : Baofeng UV-5R, Baofeng BF-F8HP, Alinco DJ-500TB, Alinco DJ-MD5TGP and DJ-MD5T,
Anytone AT-D578UV III Pro, Yaesu FT-8900R. There is no charge for these radios. There may be others, check first.

If you don't use your radio: you may not know how to work it, if it transmits or if you can reach anyone!

The longer it is the better it hears. The more gain the better it talks. Higher up is better for both. But,
the more gain the narrower the bandwidth (IE: less effective and safe on a wider frequency range.)
3 dB Antenna gain doubles your effective power, Coax Cable 3 dB loss cuts it in half.
Gain in dBd = gain in dBi - 2.15 dB, Gain in dBi = gain in dBd + 2.15 dB.

The ideal height with flat terrain is 35' above ground. But here there are ridges and trees
so 60' - 70' would be better for Hams Only just go the higher the better

MURS/FRS should be above roof line, but not too high to interfere with other areas.

Want to keep your equipment up and running without electricity?

Why would I have a battery set-up if I have a generator?

If you have an all house generator with automatic cut over you probably wouldn't. But if you have one that you have to take out and hookup when there is a power outage, you may want the battery set-up. First it is ready to go which gets you running sooner. Second when your generator is running it probably has excess power. This can be used to charge the batteries. You can then use the batteries to run what you need and turn the generator off. That will save you fuel, which saves you money. It also saves you trips to get more fuel during a long power outage. Third batteries are quiet, generators aren't.

If you are running a 12v radio (IE: mobile radio) in the house you can run multiple batteries in parallel (positive to positive and negative to negative) or just one. Hook the charger, monitor and radio to the battery(s) full time. That way you don't switch the batteries and DC power supply back and forth. If you are running HT's you will need an inverter to run their chargers and anything else than needs to be plugged into a 120v outlet.
